Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of nitrogen and sulphur rates on yield, yield components, some nutrient uptake, and quantitative and qualitative traits of spring safflower. An experiment was carried out in Agricultural Research Station of Ardabil, Iran, in 2008.Treatments, Nitrogen (0, 50 and 100 Kg/ha) and Sulphur (0, 25 and 50 Kg/ha) were arranged as factorial based on RCBD with three replications. Results showed that nitrogen and sulphur had a significant effect on yield, yield components, nutreint uptake, and quantitative and qualitative traits. The branch/plant, heads/plant, 100-seed weight, oil, seed, and biomass yield and harvest index increased with increasing of nitrogen fertilizer rates; however increasing in nitrogen rates decreased the oil seed percent. The highest oil (1086.9 Kg.ha-1) and seed (3804.3 Kg.ha-1) yields were obtained from 100 Kg .ha-1 nitrogen. In all traits (except oil percent and plant height), 25 and 50 Kg S.ha-1 application didn’t show differenct significantly together. The highest oil amount (31.51%) obtained by 50 Kg S. ha-1 application. Harvest index didn’t show any different significantly with sulphur application. The plant and first branch from ground height significantly affected by nitrogen and sulphur application, so the highest plant high (71.6 cm) obtained with the maximum levels of these fertilizers compound treatment. Nutrient uptakes increased with increasing of nitrogen fertilizer application (except sodium with negative affect), also the maximum nutrient uptake amount obtained with the highest level of sulphur application. Interaction between N×S was significant on Sodium, Calcium, and Sulphur uptake. The highest seed protein amount (22.8%) obtained with 100 Kg N.ha-1 application. The results also were Similar to leaf protein trait. In this trait, 50 Kg N.ha-1 and 25 Kg S.ha-1 was the best compound treatment. The highest protein yield (864.2 Kg.ha-1) was belonged to the maximum nitrogen fertilizer level application. Relative water capacity increased with increasing both of nitrogen and sulphur fertilizer rates. The maximum leaf area index obtaiend with 100 Kg N.ha-1, but 25 and 50 Kg S.ha-1 didn’t have different significant on LAI. The light extination coefficient decreased with nitrogen application and the radation use efficeincy increased with nitrogen application. the agronomy traits, both quantitative and qualitative, on safflower improved with nitrogen application, but it is seem that sulphur application in higher values not only has useful effects on these traits, but also decrease the useful effects of nitrogen fertilizer. There for, in order to improvement agronomy traits and production quantitative and qualitative yield, applications 100 Kg N.ha-1 with 25 Kg S.ha-1 for safflower (serin cult) in Ardabil region are recommended.
