Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of therapeutic games on short-term memory and social skills of mentally retarded children. Methodology:The present study was an experimental study with pre-test-posttest design with control group.The statistical population of this research included all mentally retarded children (150 people) who had intellectual disability records in Tahhab city in 2012. The sample of this study was 30 children with mental disability records that were selected from the statistical population and randomly assigned to two groups of 15 (experimental and control). The experimental group was trained under the London-based Therapeutic Training Game (2003), which was held in 8 sessions of 1.5 hours and held twice a week. The data were collected based on the social skills test of Matson et al. (1983) and the revised Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Shahid (2004), in pre-test and post-test for both groups.All analyzes were performed using SPSS software. Results:The results of the study showed that game therapy therapy had a significant effect on short-term memory and social skills of mentally retarded children. Conclusion:Based on the findings of the data analysis, therapeutic games can be used to improve short-term memory and social skills of mentally retarded children.
