Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of group poetry therapy on positive and negative syndromes and emotional expressivity of chronic schizophrenia spectrum patients. Thus, an experiment has been conducted as pre-test, post-test with control group design. The population study was consisted schizophrenia patients that were kept in Psychotherapy Institutes of Ardabil City. Twenty-two men were randomely selected regarding initial considerations and were divided into 2 groups as test and control. Poetry therapy was carried on experimental group for 11 sessions, and the other group did not receive any therapy. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used for data collection. Emotional expression was measured through Persian version of Berkeley Expressivity Questionnaire and data were analyzed using analysis of covariance on SPSS-22. The results showed that the mean marks of post test trial group in negative and positive syndromes were significantly diminished through poetry therapy in intervention group (P<0.05). Also, it has been showed that positive expressivity (PE) was significantly enhanced in intervention group and negative expressivity (NE) and impulse strength (IS) were significantly diminished, but these parameters did not change significantly in control group at the end of trial. The use of poetry as an intervention nonpharmaceutical treatment played a significant role on chronic schizophrenia spectrum patients that can be applied by psychologists in therapy centers.
