Abstract

Drying foods is one of the oldest conservation methods. As the humidity of foods decreases, it cannot undergo microbial spoilage and its weight and volume considerably decreases. One of the main problems of the crops dryers is high cost, high energy consumption, and subsequently user’s profits reduction. The solution proposed for this problem is use of the free clean solar energy and use of the recoverable materials in the current system to help the environment. In this study, a solar dryer was created. This system includes a collector and an innovatively manufactured chamber made of environmental waste materials (empty beverage bottles), and PCM materials have been used in its dryer chamber for energy storage. After designing and manufacturing the device, it was included in the laboratory conditions. Air rate, temperature, and radiation intensity were measured every moment. According to the results, the temperature of the absorber plate of this innovatively manufactured collector increased up to 111 ºC and the temperature of the output air was 50 to 60 ºC different from the ambient temperature. The best results were obtained in a fan air velocity of 0.5 m/s at 2 to 3 p.m. in test days. The phase change temperature of the materials whose phase was changed was 51 to 53 ºC. When the chamber temperature exceeded 53 ºC during the test, the materials’ phase changed and delivered their stored heat to the environment. Therefore, they slightly prevented temperature loss of the environment so that the temperature loss of the environment occurred less severely under the phase change conditions. Finally, mint-drying test was carried out. The mint with an initial humidity of 86 percent lost 86 g of its water and reached a secondary humidity of 12 percent during the product test in 273 minutes and the mean chamber temperature of 44.3 ºC and air velocity of 0.5 m/s.
