Abstract

Non-covalent interactions play a fundamental role in many areas of modern chemistry. In particular, anion-n interactions are strong non-covalent binding forces with deficient olefinic and aromatic centers. The anion–n interaction has been discussed by electrostatic and anion-induced polarization terms. The nature of the electrostatic component has been explained by the means of positive quadruple moment of aromatic ring. These interactions would be expected to be repulsive; however theoretical studies have demonstrated that they are energetically favorable. The theoretical results have greatly encouraged the exploration of anion molecular recognition due to the importance of the phenomenon in biology, medicine, catalysis and environment, for instance.
