Abstract

Adsorption is the starting point of many important chemical and physical processes such as catalytic reactions, friction measurement studies and gas sensors. Study of CO molecule adsorption on transition metal surfaces is one of the most interesting fields in recent decades. CO adsorption on a metal surface is a crucial step for some highly used catalytic reactions, such as CO oxidation and hydrogenation. In addition, because of the small size of these molecules, it has been a measure molecule in surface sciences. The main reason for studying CO adsorption on the metal surfaces is concerned with technical and applied importance of CO oxidation catalytic reactions and the convergence of this dangerous and poisonous gas to a less dangers CO2. Another appropriate catalysis for CO oxidation is gold. Gold has long been regarded as an inert surface and bulk gold surfaces do not chemisorbs many molecules easily .In recent years, supported gold particles particularly those below 5 nm in size have been shown to be effective as catalysts for low temperature CO oxidation, selective oxidation of propen to propen oxide, water gas shift, NO reduction, selective hydrogenation of acetylene (or butadiene) and other reactions .the main aim of this paper is examining CO oxidation process on the gold catalyst surfaces in nano scale .
