Abstract

The electrochemical oxidation of o- and p-diphenols has been described [1, 2] and has shown that these compounds can be oxidized to o- and p-quinones respectively. The quinones formed are quite reactive and can be attacked by a variety of nucleophiles [3, 4]. The mechanism is dependent on such parameters as, nature of nucleophile (electronwithdrawing or donating), electrolysis medium (solvent, acidity or pH...) and catechol type. Also, in this work, electrochemical oxidation of catechol has been studied in the presence of cysteine as nucleophile in aqueous solution, by means of cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential coulometry
