Abstract

The functionalization of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) through the chemical binding of atoms, molecules or molecular groups has attracted much attention, as it offers a possible way to modify the electronic, chemical, optical and mechanic properties of SWCNTs. Chemical functionalization of nanotubes is important in the development of novel materials, notably to improve nanotube solubility and purification techniques. Functionalization also provides a route to improved matrix-nanotube bonding in nanotube composites.
