Abstract

In recent years, ionic liquids (ILs) have been considered attractive compounds due to their unique intrinsic properties, such as negligible vapor pressure, large liquid range, and “green” replacements for volatile organic solvents [1-4]. In order to exploit the tremendous potential of ionic liquids, it is essential to know their physicochemical, nature of the interactions between cations and anions of ionic liquids with the added co- solvent as well. Conductometry is an electrochemical technique, which provides us information concerning association of ions and character of the ion-pair [5]. The low concentration chemical model (LcCM) of conductivity equation is widely recently applied for the correlation of conductance data in aqueous and nonaqueous electrolyte solution [6]. In this work, the electrical conductance of ionic liquids, [BMIm]Br and 1- butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [BMIm][BF4] were measured in binary mixtures of the ionic liquid and water or organic solvents, methanol (MeOH), acetonitrile (MeCN), N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMA), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) at T = 298.15 K. The LcCM conductance equation was used to fit the molar conductance values from which association constant Ka, and the limiting molar conductivity ΛO and association distance R were determined.
