Abstract

The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer, is one of the most important aphids and vector of viral diseases in potato fields. The seasonal population fluctuation of this aphid was studied during the growing season in 2008 on 10 potato cultivars in Ardabil. Analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences among the cultivars in respect to the aphid density. The highest density of aphid was observed on Aozonia cultivar. Although there were not significant differences between the other nine cultivars, but the lowest numbers of aphids were observed on Cosima and Cosmos cultivars. Two peaks of aphid's population were observed in the Ardabil region. The biological parameters of the aphid were investigated on six potato cultivars in a growth chamber that was set at 20 ± 2 °C, 65 ± 5 % RH and 16: 8 (L: D). There were highly significant differences among these cultivars with respect to the net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm), finite rate of increase (λ) and doubling time (DT) of the aphid population. The lowest R0 was observed on Cosmos and the highest R0 was observed on Kondor and Agria. The rm of aphid ranged from 0.225 to 0.293 female/female/day on the cultivars and were highest on Aozonia and Kondor and lowest on Cosmos. The lowest λ and the longest DT was observed on Cosmos. Therefore, it was concluded that the Cosmos cultivar had both antixenosis and antibiosis resistance to the green peach aphid and it can be used as a resistant cultivar in IPM of the green peach aphid.

Persian Title:
