Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigation Effect of Altitude on Lung Function and Aerobic Power in Male Athletes. Methods : Eighteen voluntary male athletes, (age; 21.66±0.37yr), (weight;68.88±2.1kg), (Height; 173.3± 2cm and vo2max: 49.6±1.49) were selected to this study on spirometric parameters and aerobic power test then each subject was informed consent form. Respiratory function and aerobic power were assessed in participants before ascending at baseline (1400 meter) and after ascending at 3600 meter in savalan Mount and after descent sea level(3 day's interval between ) respectively with a Spiro lab II and Queens College Step Test . Spirometric parameters and aerobic power changes were compared using ANOVA for repeated with Bonferroni (post hoc) statistical analysis computations were performed by spss 16 and p≤0.05 was considered significant. Results: spirometric parameters(FVC,FEV1,FEF25-75%,PEF,PIF,MVV, FEV1/FVC(%) and VC) at altitude(3600 m) were significantly increased with compared see level and 1400m(P<0.05).but FEV1,FEF25-75%, FEV1/FVC(%) and MVV was not significantly different between 3600m level and 1400m level. Also FIV1 was not significantly different between levels. (P= 0.902).VO2max at altitude (3600 m) were significantly decreased with compared see level and 1400m. Conclusion: acute ascent to altitude above 3600m lessens airway resistance that facilitates expiratory airflow and increase majority Spirometric parameters. Also VO2max decreased at altitude in male athlete due to a reduction in arterial oxygen content (CaO2).
