Abstract

The present study aimed at exploring cognitive and emotional recognition and inhibition processes in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder and comparing them with their non clinical counterparts. The population of the study comprised all individuals diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder ranging in age from 15 to 45 years and referring to state and private psychiatric hospitals, and counseling and treatment centers during the second half of the year 1388 and the first half of the year 1389. The control group population consisted of all individuals in the 15 to 45 year age range with no history of psychiatric symptoms. Using a convenient sampling procedure, 40 individuals were selected from each group after being matched on age, sex and educational status. Data were collected using Stroops three card test, Emotional Control Questionnaire, Facial Emotional Recognition Test and Word Recognition Test from the Wechsler Memory Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16 with statistical methods of multivariate analysis of variance and discriminant function analysis. Findings revealed that individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder perform poorly on cognitive inhibition, emotional inhibition and emotional recognition when compared with normal controls. However, no significant group differences emerged with regard to cognitive recognition. The results, the obsessive-compulsive group demonstrated significantly poor performance in cognitive and emotional processing, with emotional processing differences being more significant.
