Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate effect of processing Amaranth grain (Amaranthus hybridus) on performance and economic parameters in laying hens. A total of 96 Hy-Line W-36 laying hens (67-wk-old) were divided into four groups with six replicates per group (four birds per replicate) and fed one of the four experimental diets. Standard conditions of formulation diets were determined according to the Hy-Line W-36 catalog. The duration of the experiment was 6 weeks. The experimental treatments consisted of four levels of processing amaranth grain that included control group (0% and based on corn and soybean) and levels of 5, 10 and 15%. The results showed that feeding the processing amaranth grain at high levels of consumption decreased performance (P<0.05). Feeding amaranth increased ECR and PCR (P<0.05). The use of processing amaranth in laying hens diet was similar and close to the control group on feed cost for kg egg, total cost of kg egg and total cost of kg egg (P>0.05). In conclusion showed that the necessity of enzymatic of processing Amaranth grain is essential to be able to compete economically with other cereals and supplementation of diet. Productive Amaranth grain in iran can be developed in poultry nutrition and has a promising potential and making amaranth a feedstuff.
