Abstract

In recent years, sustainable agricultural debate, especially organic farming, has been identified as one of the reasons for sustainable development. The purpose of this study is to investigate organic farming and its role in sustainable agricultural development. Sustainable agriculture is based on the use of low inputs, and is based on low input systems, the efficient and productive use of soil, water, energy, nutrients, and labour. At the same time, it minimises negative environmental effects, whilst conserving biodiversity. . Organic farming as an approach to sustainable agriculture tries to decrease environmental problems and possible health hazards caused by the residues from pesticides and fertilizers. Organic agriculture is a factor of sustainable development: for society (health, employment…), the environment (methane emission, water resource…) and the economy (Source of Wealth…). Based on previous studies, the development of organic agriculture is opportnity for sustainable agricultural development. Organic agriculture can reduce many of the environmental impacts of conventional agriculture, it can increase productivity in small farmers’ fields, it reduces reliance on costly external inputs, and guarantees price premiums for organic products.The present paper uses a documentary and library study to examine the concept and importance of sustainable agriculture, explains organic farming, and finally describes the role of organic farming in sustainable agricultural development and offers some suggestions in this regard.
