Abstract

The aim of this study was to survey of dead on arrival rate (preslaughter mortality) of broiler farms before the killing line at poultry industrial slaughterhouse. The data were collected by repeatedly referring to the Namin slaughterhouse of northeastern from Ardabil Province in 2008 and 2014, and monitoring the slaughter chain. Total number slaughtered, total number condemned and number of those condemned for disease and pathological changes and, finally, preslaughter mortality and their weight were recorded. In the this study, 2741794 and 3488916 were slaughtered during the years 2008 and 2014, respectively. which out of these, 20479 (0.74%) carcasses and 42310 (1.20%) carcasses were condemned. Out of all condemnations, preslaughter mortality in 2008 and 2014 consisted of 25 carcasses (0.12%) and 6437carcasses (15.21%), respectively, The financial loss as a result of the condemnation of dead on arrival was estimated 27 USD and 2238 USD within 2008 and 2014, respectively. The effects of seasons were significant (p<0.05) on percentage of preslaughter mortality, so that summer and winter had the highest and lowest of frequency of preslaughter mortality, respectively. The results of this study showed that frequency of preslaughter mortality and its loss have significantly increased during the 5 years and July. Therefore, improvement of management factors in the transport of poultry from farms to slaughterhouses and the consideration of heat in the summer season is necessary.
