Abstract

In this study, the functional response of fourth instar larvae and adult male and female of this predator was investigated to Schizaphis graminum (Rondani).The experiments were carried out at 27±1 °C, %70±10% RH and a photoperiod of 16: 8 (L: D) h. The experiments were handling time conducted in Petri dishes (9 cm in diameter) containing barley learves (cv. Sahra). Different densities (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 96, 128 and 180) of the aphid nymphs were offered separately to the perdutors. Afther 24 h, the number of preys consumed was recored. The results showed that the functional response of tested stages of the predator to different densities of S. graminum is type Π. The Rogers equation was used to determine the attack rate (a) and handling time (T_h) parameters. Attack rates of male, female and larvae of the predator were estimated to be 0/0613± 0/0034, 0/0767± 0/0047, 0/0691± 0/0041 h-1, and were 0/00797± 0/0097, 0/0482± 0/0098, 0/0452± 0/0103 h, respectively. This study revealed that H. variegata has a good potential for control of S. graminum on barley plant.
