Abstract

In this research, functional response of fourth instar larvae and adult female of H. variegata was investigated to different densities (3, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 140 and 200) of 4-d-old nymphs of Aphis gossypii in laboratory conditions (25 ± 1 °C, 70 ± 10% RH and a photoperiod of 16L: 8D h). The experiments were conducted in Petri dishes containing cucumber leaves for 24 hours in 10 replicates. The logistic regression showed a type II functional response for fourth instar larvae and adults females. Rogers’ random equation was used to determine the attack rate (a) and handling time (Th) parameters. The attack rate and handling time were estimated 0.01738±0.0135 h−1 and 0.0493±0.0069 h for larvae, and 0.1241 ± 0.0096 h−1 and 0.0422±0.0084 h for adult female, respectively. The attack rate of larvae was significantly higher than that of adult female. However, difference between handling times was not significant. This study revealed that both larvae and adult stages of H. variegata had good potential for control of A. gossypii .
