Abstract

To evaluate the efficiency of natural enemies, their prey preference should be considered. In this research, the preference of adult female of Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) was investigated to the nymphs of Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae in five different densities of 60:60, 40:80, 80:40, 20:100 and 100:20 (M. persicae : A. gossypii). The experiments were carried out under controlled conditions (25 ± 1 °C, 70 ± 10% RH and 16:8 L:D h). Before the experiment, the predators starved for 24 h. The experiments were conducted in Petri dishes containing cucumber leaves for 24 hours in 10 replicates.The mean prey consumption by the predators in above-mentioned densities was 33.10 ± 3.81 and 43.60 ± 2.98; 20.70 ± 1.15 and 66.80 ± 2.39; 38.40 ± 3.06 and 27.90 ± 2.88; 8.80 ± 1.61 and 80.60 ± 4.74; 64.80 ± 1.36 and 16 ± 0.39, respectively. Manly´s preference index for above prey ratios were estimated 0.3703 and 0.6297; 0.2878 and 0.7122; 0.3593 and 0.6407; 0.2599 and 0.7401; 0.3916 and 0.6084, respectively. The results showed that change in the ratio of two prey species has not changed prey preference of H. variegata.
