Abstract

Endophytic microorganisms are defined as microorganisms that colonize internal tissues of the plants without causing visible external signs of infection or negative effects on the host. These microorganisms were isolated from a diverse of vascular and nonvascular plants under natural and agricultural ecosystems and have important roles in the diversity and development of plant societies. In the present study species diversity of endophytic fungi in the family Aspergillaceae were examined from pear plants in Urmia. Healthy leaf and branch samples without any symptoms of infection were collected from different locations in Urmia and fungal isolation were done based on common endophytic fungi isolation methods. From 50 examined plant samples, a total of 42 isolates with typical morphological characteristics of the fungi in the family Aspergillaceae were obtained. Species identification was done based on combination of morphological characteristics and sequence data obtained from parts of β-tubulin gene. Based on the results, three genera: Aspergillus, Penicillium and Talaromyces and 16 species viz. Aspergillus creber, A. europaeus, A. flavus, A. ochraceous, A. sydowii, A. terreus, Penicillium brevicompactum, P. canescens, P. chrysogenum, P. citrinum, P. expansum, P. flavigenum, P. sizovae, P. somatrense, P. rubens and Talaromyces minioluteus were identified. The genus Penicillium with nine identified species had the highest species diversity followed by Aspergillus with six and Talaromyces with one species. All the identified species are reported for the first time as endophytic fungi from pear plants in Iran and the world. Also, Aspergillus europaeous is a new species for Iran mycobiota. This is the first study determining species diversity of the fungi in the Aspergillaceae family from pear plants in Iran.
