Abstract

Due to natural nature and the presence of homologous drug combinations, medicinal plants usually have no unwanted side effects and particular importance in maintain the health of humans via the prevention and treatment of diseases. Iran has very favorable climate and geographical conditions for the growth of many medicinal plants. Despite the existence of rich herbal resources in the country, the lack of standards in the quantity and quality of the active ingredients of many medicinal herbs makes it difficult to enter and compete in the global trade, and as a result, there is still a dependence on imports of products such as tea in the country. Production of herbal substances based on quantitative and qualitative standards of these compounds is the most important principle in the medicinal plants industry. The only way in which Iranian herbs enter the international markets is to standardize these products according to the needs of the global market. The purpose of standardization of medicinal plants is to study the concentration and type of active ingredients in them. Determining the amount of active ingredients and the type of their constituents is the most important quantitative and qualitative indicator for standardizing of plant products. The standardization of medicinal plants has a significant impact on manufacturers efforts to enhance the quality of medicinal plants in order to match with developed characteristics and properties. On the other hand, standardized herbal products contain specific and fixed quality ingredients, which strength the domestic market and customer satisfaction, as well as improve the scientific and qualitative production of medicinal plants and increase the export of herbal products.
