Abstract

Melissa officinalis (Melissa officinalis L.), a herbaceous and perennial herb belonging to the mint family, has many medicinal and edible uses. In order to investigate the effects of growth and harvesting time on antioxidant activity of the medicinal plant with experimental lemon balm during the years 1977-1972 in two districts in Chaharmahal va Bakhtiari province (Shahrekord and Lordegan) and one area in Isfahan province (Isfahan province). A randomized complete block design with 3 replications was used. For this purpose, the vegetative body of Lemon balm was harvested in three stages (early June, August and September) and after drying in shade, the essential oil of this plant was extracted by water distillation and then antioxidant activity of the essential oils of the samples. Measured using DPPH method. The results showed that the highest and lowest IC50 values were obtained from Frieden region (September harvest) with 203.1 mg / ml and Frieden area (July harvest) with 0.65 mg / ml respectively. The results indicated that the antioxidant activity was different at different harvesting times and locations, which was influenced by the time of plant harvest and climatic factors in the study area.
