Abstract

In order to evaluate the effects of Nitrogen fertilizer application on the forage quantity and quality of forages in intercropping of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) and Berseem Clover (Trifolium alexandrium L.), a field experiment was carried out as factoriel based on the randomized complete blocks design (RCBD) with 15 treatments and three replication at the faculty of Agriculture, University of Maragheh during 2018 growing season. The first factor included different level of nitrogen fertilizer application included 0, 30 and 60 kg.ha-1 and the second factor was different planting patterns included barley monoculture, grass pea monoculture, berseem clover monoculture, intercropping of barley+ grass pea and barley+ berseem clover. The results demonstrated that the highest fresh and dry weights of forages was achieved in the plant monocultures. Also, the fresh and dry weight of forages increased with application of nitrogen fertilizer. The land equivalent ratio (LER) in all intercropping patterns was higher than plant monocultures that indicate the higher efficiency of these treatments compared with monocultures. The highest (1.29) and the lowest (1.02) LER was observed in the intercropping of barley+ berseem clover with application 60 kg.ha-1 nitrogen fertilizer and intercropping of barley+ grass pea with non-usage of nitrogen fertilizer. Also, the highest crude protein content was achieved in the intercropping of barley+ grass pea and barley+ berseem clover with application 60 kg.ha-1 nitrogen fertilizer. Based on the obtained results, the intercropping of barley with grass pea and berseem clover with application of 60 kg.ha-1 nitrogen fertilizer could enhanced the forage quality compared with monoculture.
