Abstract

Gerbera plant belongs to Compositeae family. Being one of the most important families in floriculture industry. Having beautiful flowers with the variety of flower color make gerbera one of the most valuable cut flowers. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of some chemicals on the vase life of cut gerbera flowers based on a completely randomized design in Postharvest Laboratory of Department of Horticultural Science of University of Mohaghegh Ardabili. Treatments consisted of 2, 4 and 6 mmol of each s-carvoon and nano-silver, and 10, 20 and 30 ppm of nitroprusside. According to the results there was a significant difference among treatments with respect to sugar content, RWC, electrolyte leakage and vase life. Overall, treatments did not considerably affected gerbera cut flower quality and vase life. However, nano-silver showed lower electrolyte leakage, and higher RWC and sugar content. So, the application of this compound to the vase solution is suggested.
