Abstract

The temples, among the inner organs of each city, have always enjoyed a special status, and based on architecture, have used the best and most advanced techniques on it. The mosque was not only a place of worship, but also a place to manage all things that were directly or indirectly related to religion and as well as a place for education, and even to comfort passengers and eating them. The time transition and changes makes necessitate differences in the style and function of other buildings, such as schools, monuments, palaces and caravansaries, but the mosque considered the most important building according to the religious needs in all Islamic geography. This building (Juma mosque) is a place for worship in its physical function, but in the metaphysical performance and spiritual and mystical manifestations, it seems manifestation of all the mysteries of Islamic architecture. Since there is almost no comprehensive and complete written works among studies related to construction of the Juma mosque in Ardebil so that can be considered the architectural and artistic practices of it, therefore, our main goal in this work is to study the structural features and architectural and art practices of the mentioned building, from a deeper view and different points based on new needs and with knowledge of new findings and researches and in a way that has not been used in the past history of Iran. The method of our research based on field and library settings with a qualitative and descriptive-analytic approach, which so determined the features of the Juma mosque. The Juma mosque of Ardebil is significant importance in terms of its art and architecture, and it can classified as an important building in Islamic architecture. This massive mosque has built during the Deylamites period and has evolved during the Seljuq, Ilkhanate and Qajar dynasties. The glory of this mosque is due to the extensions made by the Seljuq era, namely has the Chahartagh that there is a brick dome on top of it and a single cylindrical minaret originally has attached to the mosque.
